Notes

The acclaimed GRAMMY nominated North/South Chamber Orchestra marks its 32nd season with the release of this recording featuring five inspiring works by living American composers. Harold Schiffman employs rustic melodies instilled with an Appalachian flavor while Steven Strunk's experience as a jazz pianist informs his jazz-derived gestures and Marilyn Ziffrin's straight-forward, charming simplicity is both moving and disarming. The work by Max Lifchitz - who also conducts the ensemble -- is an intensely personal response to the violence inherent in conflict. Robert Martin based his expansive work on a war-inspired painting by Arshile Gorky, the American from Armenia whose life was deeply affected by tragedy.
